The PhD courses offered by the department are organised under the umbrella of two PhD schools. The PhD School for Literature involves courses on Medieval English literature, Renaissance literature (Shakespeare, 16th century religious literature), modern English literature (20th and 21th centuries), theatre history and performance criticism. The PhD School for Linguistics offers courses on English as well as theoretical phonology and syntax, and the history of the English language.
