Translator education has seen major shifts in pedagogy and perhaps even epistemology over the past 30 years. In this talk, Donald Kiraly will attempt to outline in broad strokes some of the major paradigm shifts he has seen and perhaps influenced during this period within this important sub-field of Translation Studies. Without purporting to be comprehensive in his talk, he will try to depict the progression of theory and practice in this domain in recent decades in terms of a logical and justifiable progression from conventional, teacher-centered instruction to the currently emerging trend towards seeing translator education as a synergistic and only partially instructional activity. Both possible factors that have influenced these shifts in pedagogical thought as well as the impact they may have on the translation profession – and the very enterprise of learning how to become a professional translator – will be touched upon in the talk.

Donald n Kiraly is a Professor in the Division of English Linguistics and Translation Studies at the University of Mainz in Germersheim, Germany. His major areas of research are Translator Education and Naturalistic Approaches to Adult Foreign Language Learning. He is the author of A Social Constructivist Approach to Translator Education (2000).
