The Associate Professor from the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University visited our faculty within the framework of the Erasmus+ program.

Pázmány University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invited Vilmos Gazdag, Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Philology, to deliver a guest lecture. His research interests include sociolinguistics, the bilingualism of Transcarpathian Hungarians, and loanword usage.

In his lecture entitled ‘The Impact of the Minority Situation and Ukrainian–Hungarian Linguistic Relations on the Language Use of Transcarpathian Hungarians’ Professor Gazdag outlined the historical, social, and linguistic landscape. He went on to examine the issues of legal regulation of language use, name usage, code-switching, and state-language contact elements, illustrating his presentation with numerous colorful examples.

Students also had the chance to meet him in an informal session to pick his brain about the ‘Transcarpathian Everyday Life’. He shared personal experience and the lessons of his own career path and talked about the current situation of the Transcarpathian Hungarian community.
