The event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the launch of Caritas Studies at the University of Freiburg and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Freiburg Caritas Association, officially registered on 20 June 1925 with the aim of supporting people in crisis situations.

The conference, moderated by Prof. Dr. Klaus Baumann, Head of the Department of Caritas Studies and Christian Social Work at the University of Freiburg, included presentations on the biblical and historical dimensions of caritas, contemporary issues of denominational welfare, as well as theological and ethical perspectives relevant to the field. Representatives of partner universities also attended the conference.

In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Klaus Baumann, the conference’s chief organizer, praised the volume Spirituality, Ethics and Social Work, edited by Rainer B. Gehrig, Michal Opatrny, Nándor Birher, and Klaus Baumann, published in 2021.
Care policy emerged as one of the conference’s key concepts, highlighting its practical significance and relevance for the development of Caritas. In this respect, the training programmes and initiatives of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Pázmány Péter Catholic University in the field of care policy represent important advancements.

Professional and academic initiatives include the international conferences organized by the Institute of Care Policy of the Faculty – for example, the international conference Care and Support – Applications of Robots and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Elderly Care, held on 27 May 2025 in Budapest – as well as a series of care-policy publications presenting the practical applicability of Hungarian professional and scientific innovations in the field and their theoretical background.
