FROM PROTO-CANAANITE WRITING SYSTEM TO THE GREEK ALPHABET. A REFLEXION UPON THE HISTORY OF ALPHABET FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PSYCHO-LINGUISTICS című előadására
ABSTRACT: A long path leads humanity from the first ideograms to the first full alphabet which permitted the marking of both consonants and vowels. If writing has arisen independently many times in different regions of the world (Egypt, Sumer, China, Mexico...), to the best of our knowledge, alphabet was invented only once, somewhere between Egypt and Phoenicia. All known alphabets seem to go back to a single source, of which the earliest documented evidence can be dated from 1900-1850 B.C. (Proto-Canaanite alphabet). Up to a certain point, scholars can give an answer to the question of how the alphabet came about. It becomes much more difficult to understand the cause of its origin: why did it come about?
In my lecture, I will try to give some clues for a possible answer to the last question. I will explore possible parallels between the development that led humanity to the discovery of the first alphabet and the cognitive steps that any child has to undergo in order to learn how to read and write in an alphabetic script. The study is built upon an experience that was held from December 2000 to January 2003 with some fifteen children of kindergarten and first year of primary school at the Lycée Français of Jerusalem.
