The paper explores Hegel's rich account of the determinate religions from his Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. It attempts to show how this material is necessary for a full appreciation of Hegel's account of religion and more importantly of his grand view of the development of human culture in general. Moreover, it aims to demonstrate the profound modern relevance of this part of Hegel's thought. Hegel was involved in a signal conflict in German intellectual life that pitted the advocates of Neo-Hellenism against the Romantics, who were interested in Eastern religions. This conflict marked the beginnings of the cultural debates that we know today under headings such as multiculturalism.
