The workshop seeks to explore the geographic and cultural patterns underlying the self-orientation and self-conception of German-speaking Europe, posing questions about where the East begins, how Germany's relation to the East has been framed across different kinds of political and cultural discourses, and how it affects the European Unions's eastward expansion.
