Public Opinion in Poland and Polish Foreign Policy

2014.09.28.
The second guest lecture of professor Wordliczek was held on 25th of September 2014.

Professor Wordliczek’s presentation was based on a public opinion poll that was carried out by the American George C. Marshall Institute in June 2014. Polish people were asked about several foreign policy-related topics, including their opinion on the NATO, the EU and member countries.

To the question ’Is NATO still essential to our country’s security?’ 60 per cent of Polish people answered yes. As far as the EU is concerned, Poland is in favour of the European integration. Most Polish people agree on that the EU membership is a positive thing and it is a privilege, since the EU mantains peace, strengthens the economies and allows freedom of travelling, working and studying within its borders. However the question of emigration is a serious problem in the country. Since 2004 more than 2 million young Polish people left Poland in order to live and work in another memeber state.

During professor Wordliczek’s presentation, we also learned that the most favourable nations for the Polish people are the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the UK and Hungary. The USA is becoming less and less favourable, because of its strict visa system.

Concerning the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the Polish public opinion is on the Ukrainian side. They condemn the acts of Russia and are prepared for a possible wave of war refugees.

Professor Wordliczek’s presentation was very useful in understanding the current foreign policy of Poland.
