PPCU Laureates Honduras Cardinal

Pázmány Péter Catholic University awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, archbishop of Honduras, of the Salesian Order. The 66-year-old cardinal is widely recognised for his humanitarian work.

Maradiaga stood up against social injustice countless times in the past years, and emphasised the importance of sharing the wealth among countries. He also contributed to the dissolving of national depts of developing countries, including Honduras.

According to Oscar Andrés Rodruguez Maradiaga, catholic universities are social institutions that can only preserve their identity and fulfill their mission by considering the demands of society. He believes, the direct aim of catholic universities is to create a society based on solidarity, mercy and love, according to the Christian message.

Those attending the event received the document summarizing the cardinal's beliefs on the political and social role of catholic universities. According to one of the ideas, catholic universities should protect and strive for human rights. The basic human rights form an objective system of standards that is the ground for all political communities.
