GRADUATION IN THE ENGLISH STUDIES MA PROGRAMME
In order to graduate, you must
- obtain a final certificate
- submit a thesis title by the given deadline
- write a thesis paper
- submit a thesis paper
- register for the final examination in the Neptun system (even if you are retaking it)
- defend your thesis paper at a final examination
1. Obtaining a Final Certificate
You have to gather all 120 credits and complete all the compulsory and elective courses in order to obtain a final certificate (“absolutorium”).
2. Submitting a thesis title
You must first select a topic and a supervisor. Then you should come up with a topic suggestion related to your respected specialisation, and your topic must be approved by your supervisor. The thesis paper is based on your individual research and ideally completed in the last semester of the MA programme with the guidance of your supervisor. Please start choosing a topic and a supervisor in time, as not all professors are available in all the semesters.
The title of your thesis paper may officially be submitted only after your supervisor has approved your topic and agreed to supervising your work on your chosen topic.

The title thus registered can be specified/changed in Neptun until 20 October/March.
This means that students who do not submit the title by the above deadlines cannot submit a thesis in the same semester. However, it is important to know that the title submitted does not "expire", i.e., it is not necessary to submit it again in a later semester: this is only necessary if the planned topic of the thesis or the person of the supervisor changes.
3. Writing a thesis paper
The thesis paper must be between 13,000 and 17,000 words, and the paper must strictly follow the formal requirements detailed in the MA thesis paper guidelines of the Institute. The language of the thesis paper is English. It is vital that the thesis paper be based on individual research and be given a theoretical contextualisation.
The MA thesis has to include a reading list prepared for the final exam by the candidate, in consultation with their supervisor. All items on the list should be connected to the broader field of the thesis itself, but they cannot include any item that appears on the Works Cited list of the thesis. The list must include 5 books, or 10 articles or chapters (or any combination of these, counting one volume as equivalent to two articles); both primary works, if relevant, and secondary, theoretical writings. The list must be included in the thesis (ideally after the Works Cited section, under a separate heading) when it is uploaded to the Neptun system.
In the final exam, the opponents and the supervisor ask questions based on this reading list. You may consult the evaluation sheet for the MA thesis paper to see what your thesis paper readers will use as a guideline when writing their evaluations.
4. Submitting a thesis paper
In order to submit your thesis paper, you need to fill in a signed plagiarism statement form that must be included in the thesis (ideally after the title page) when it is uploaded as a pdf document to the Neptun system.
The deadline for the submission of theses is April 15 in spring semesters and November 15 in autumn semesters. This deadline must be strictly interpreted, i.e., if someone does not submit their thesis by this date, they cannot be admitted to the final exam in the given semester, so their graduation will be delayed by at least one semester. If the given date falls on a holiday, the actual submission deadline will be the next working day.
As of Spring 2023, no hard copy of the thesis is required as part of the submission. The sole form of thesis submission is electronic, via Neptun. The thesis can only be uploaded after the supervisor has approved it by checking the 'Approved degree thesis' box. Consultations about thesis submission can take place as before, e.g. by email or in person; the request for the supervisor's approval cannot be made in Neptun.
Attention! Submitting the thesis does not automatically mean applying for the final exam! You must apply for the final exam separately in Neptun's system.
5. Registering for the final examination
After submitting your thesis paper, you need to register for the final examination in Neptun (even if you are retaking it).

1. SZAKDOLGOZAT
A szakdolgozat témáját az adott szakirányon belül, a témavezetővel egyeztetve választja a hallgató, majd önálló kutatással és témavezetői irányítással elkészíti a mesterképzés utolsó félévében.
Választható témakörök és témavezetők
A szakdolgozat törzsszövegének terjedelme 13-17000 szó, és minden esetben szigorúan be kell tartania az Intézet által megadott formai követelményeket (ld. a letölthető dokumentumot alább). A szakdolgozat nyelve angol.
Fontos, hogy a dolgozat ténylegesen önálló kutatáson alapuljon, és hogy irodalomelméleti kontextualizációval rendelkezzen.
A hivatalos szakdolgozati címbejelentésre akkor kerülhet sor, ha a hallgató és a témavezető már megegyeztek a szakdolgozat témájában és a témavezető elvállalta annak vezetését.
A 2024/25. tanév őszi félévétől megváltozik a szakdolgozat címének bejelentése: az új eljárásrendben a hallgató a Hweben (a Neptunban) jelentkezik a témára/témavezetőhöz.
A címmegadási időszak kezdete: a szorgalmi időszak első napja.
A címmegadási határidő: október 15. / március 15.

A megadott címet október/március 20-ig lehet a Neptunban pontosítani/módosítani.
Ez azt jelenti, hogy az a hallgató, aki fenti határidőkig nem nyújtja be a témáját, azonos félévben nem nyújthat be szakdolgozatot. Fontos tudnivaló ugyanakkor, hogy a leadott címbejelentő nem „évül el", vagyis nem szükséges egy későbbi félévben újra benyújtani: ilyesmire csak akkor van szükség, ha a szakdolgozat tervezett témája vagy a témavezető személye megváltozott.

A szakdolgozatnak tartalmaznia kell egy irodalomlistát is, amely a szakdolgozat tágabb témaköréhez kapcsolódik, és amely alapján a záróvizsgán a témavezető és a bíráló tanár együttesen feleltetik a hallgatót (ld. 2.2).

2. ZÁRÓVIZSGA MENETE

Állítson össze a hallgató a témavezető segítségével a szakdolgozat leadásáig egy olyan irodalomlistát, amely a szakdolgozat tágabb témaköréhez kapcsolódik — a lista tartalmazzon 5 könyvet, vagy 10 cikket, legyen köztük primér és szekundér, elméleti mű is, de ezek a művek ne legyenek azonosak a szakdolgozatban hivatkozottakkal. A záróvizsgán ezekből lesz a vizsga, a témavezető és a bíráló tanár együttesen feleltetik a hallgatót. A listát a szakdolgozatba beleillesztve kell feltölteni.
3. NYELVVIZSGAKÖVETELMÉNY
