East Asian Studies MA

From the 2014/15 academic year, the Corvinus University Budapest and the Pázmány Péter Catholic University launches a new joint MA program named East Asian Studies. The aim of the program is to train experts who have a good knowledge of the East Asian region and its development, speak Chinese, and are able to participate in building relationships with East Asia in the fields of business, economy, diplomacy, administration, or science.

Why East Asia?

With its 3.3 billion inhabitants, East Asia broadly understood is the world's most populous and most quickly developing area, the motor of world economy. Three of the world's five biggest economies are located here, and the significance of the region in world economy and politics keeps growing. The area is by now one of the most important centers of scientific innovation and high technology, while its ancient cultures also experience a new revival. As a result, there is an increasing demand for experts across the world, including Hungary, who know the region, speak one of its languages, and are cognizant of the basics of international relations, law, economy, and intercultural communications. Such skills are already highly advantageous on the labor market – from business to public administration, diplomacy, and science – and with the further development of the region, their significance will continue to rise.

Who should apply?

The MA program is primarily suggested for those holding a BA degree in international studies or who have a diploma in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or other similar humanities, and wish to supplement their existing knowledge with more practically oriented skills. In addition, the program may be useful for all students with a degree in economy, social sciences, law, administration, or humanities, who want to specialize in the East Asian region or one of its countries.

What is it about?

Thanks to the combination of knowledge and opportunities available at the two universities, students will acquire a sound knowledge of the basics of international relations and international law, intercultural communications, world economics, and their corresponding fields; as well as the history and culture of China, India, Korea, and South East Asia, as well as their current social, political, and economic system, including the particularities of the region, and its significance for foreign policy and security. They also receive intensive training in Chinese language; those who already speak Chinese may continue their studies from the intermediate level, while others may start from the beginning.

What else is there to know?

The program extends to 4 semesters, located at the Fővám tér building of CUB and the Mikszáth tér building of PPCU in downtown Budapest. Deadline for applications: February 15, 2014.
