Peter Sherwood, a magyar irodalom avatott műfordítója és nyugalomba vonulása előtt a magyar nyelv és kultúra oktatója, általa válogatott, elsősorban XX. és XXI. századi magyar írások angolul megjelent műfordításainak segítségével avatta be hallgatóit az angolra, napjain lingua francájára történő műfordítás folyamatába s fel hívta a figyelmet a folyamat során az óvatlan műfordítóra leselkedő veszélyekre és csapdákra (mindhalálig≠until his death; én itt hagynék csapot és papot≠I would leave here the petcocks and the padres/I would leave here the peacocks and the priests), majd a workshopon résztvevők maguk is megpróbálkozhattak módszere alkalmazásával.

I taught Hungarian at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, now part of University College London, for 35 years before being appointed László Birinyi, Sr., Distinguished Professor of Hungarian Language and Culture at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, in 2008. I retired in 2014 and returned to London.

I am primarily a linguist, with a special interest in Hungarian grammar, Anglo-Hungarian bilingual lexicography and the closest linguistic kin of Hungarian, the Siberian languages Mansi (Vogul) and Khanty (Ostyak), but continue to research on a wide range of topics while translating contemporary Hungarian (and, with my wife Julia Sherwood, contemporary Slovak) literature into English.

Recent publications include the translation of a selection of Antal Szerb's essays into English and Béla Hamvas's The Philosophy of Wine, as well as short articles on Sir John Bowring (Magyar Könyvszemle), Vernon Duckworth Barker (Korunk) and Kossuth (Slavonic and East European Review, London). An expanded Hungarian version of the latter article is forthcoming in the journal 2000, as is an article on the history of the Hungarian saying "Nyelvében él a nemzet" (A nation may be said to live in its language), in Magyar Nyelv.
