A short history of the GPRT and chronicles of (more recent) previous editions

The GPRT originally started out in 1997 as a bilateral forum for discussion between Government Phonologists in Vienna and Budapest. Then in the years 2002–2004, it developed into a regular gathering characterised by a relaxed atmosphere. It was organised each spring by the local teams of either Vienna or Budapest, who took it in turns to host. It ended up attracting speakers and an audience from all over Europe and inspiring discussions both inside and outside the conference room. The rebirth of this tradition was witnessed by the participants in Nova Gorica in 2008.

the topics of the discussions

1. The status of coronals and velars with respect to unmarkedness: Which are unmarked and why? Does it matter at all? (To what extent can we establish markedness relations between these two sets based solely on phonological consideration?)
2. Universal phonetic interpretation of elements vs arguments based on alternations taken from languages where the interpretation IS different: can we have both, don't we "cheat'' here? If it is not universal we lose the strength of the theory too...
3. Let us suppose all forces are right-to-left: what do we do to phenomena like vowel harmony and progressive voice assimilation.
4. Can GP and CV and the related thoeries handle stress or it is sent to Metrical Phonology? What is stress then phonologically: a CV? Harris 1997 does speak about such issues, how are those or other insights incorporated into CVCV or VC?

GPRT 2009

GPRT'09 was held at the Piliscsaba campus of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Hungary, on 25 April 2009, organized by the local phonological team of the English Department.

Information for presenters:
We (well, at least one of the organizers :-)) strongly encourage slideshow presentations with no handouts (full presentations can be uploaded to this website in any format after the roundtable!). Nevertheless, if you want to distribute handouts, we recommend that you bring about (25?) copies. There are photocopiers in the senior common room of the Department, so we may be able to make further copies for you. The Department also has a data projector and a laptop, but please note that no new font or software can be installed on that laptop, so it is safer if you bring yours, or if you send us your presentation in advance so that we can check whether it is compatible with the existing setup of the laptop. (Unfortunately there will not be a technician available during the conference to help with computer-assisted presentations.)

Internet:
On the whole day of the roundtable, there will be free internet access in the lecturers' computer room of the Department (Rm.131 in Ambrosianum, with three PCs).

[As it is customary, it will be a one-day event, with a welcome dinner on the Friday and a farewell dinner on the Sat. There is no registration fee (i.e., no fancy promo pens will be given away in the registration package so you'd better bring your own ;) ), and you'll have to pay your own bill at the welcome dinner. However, during the day there will be coffee and snacks, and a cold sandwich lunch provided. At the end of the day, all participants will be invited to a three-course farewell dinner. Each speaker will be given an official certificate of participation (if you do not present but need one, let us know).]

[Abstract submission was closed on 30 September 2017. We are still accepting audience-only registrations here (we need you to register for reasons of catering).

In the form, you are asked to indicate if you plan to present (in which case you are asked to add a title and a brief, max. 1-page abstract) or to attend as audience only (in which case we need you to register for reasons of catering). As is traditional, talks will be assigned on a "first come first served" basis (based on the receipt of the full abstract). Abstract submission is possible either directly in the form, or in email (to bbkati@yahoo.com).]

GPRT 2019

was organised jointly by Institut für Sprachwissenschaft, Universität Wien (main organiser: Markus Pöchtrager) and Institute of English and American Studies, PPCU (main organiser: Katalin Balogné Bérces). The three-day event kicked off on 13 June 2019 in Budapest, with a fringe event / roundtable discussion, while the main, conference-style meeting was held in Vienna, on 14-15 June 2019.
