BNY-DK-240A Szabadon választható tárgy 5. / Issues in English phonology Friday 14.15 (Danubianum F05/217)

The course has two components: (i) a systematic overview of English phonology in the form of a lecture course; and (ii) follow-up discussions of selected issues of the overview. The lecture course takes place in Danubianum F05 -- students will be required to follow that course, read the readings, etc. The follow-up discussions will take place *after* the lectures in sessions fixed beforehand, and primarily, their task will be to *bring issues to discuss* based on the lectures and the readings.

BMNAN10500A = BNY-DK-2xx Change and variation in English Wed 14.15-15.45 [+16.00-17.30] (BME-Z 220) online (MS Teams)

Course for English Studies MA, Linguistics MA, and Linguistics PhD students; seminar / lecture course, 90-min / 180-min acc. to study plan. Organised in a hybrid setting (the online part in MS Teams, the in-person part in Room Z 220) betw. 14:15-15:45. To harmonise all the different needs of the students, we organise weekly 90-min sessions in a hybrid setting (classroom+MS Teams connection) (until we are forced to go online-only), with oral presentations (slideshows) held by students which are optional but ideally, each student holds one. To replace the second 90-min slot for MA students and raise the level of difficulty for PhD students, each student is also expected to write a 2-3-page home essay either at the end of the study period or during the exam period (depending on how much time is available for receiving the credits for the course). A kurzus két kérdést vizsgál. Az egyik, hogy milyen elemzési nehézségeket okoz a kurrens formális fonológiaelméletek (azaz nem a használatalapú fonológiák, mint pl. az exemplárelmélet) számára a nyelvi adatokban tapasztalható inter- és intrabeszélő szintű variáció (dialektális különbségek, ingadozás, opcionalitás stb.). A másik vizsgálandó kérdés pedig az, hogy ezzel egyidőben ugyanez a nyelvi variáció milyen módon segíti elő a fonológiaelmélet fejlődését azzal, hogy egyrészt a parametrikus eltéréseken keresztül újszerű adatokat szolgáltat az Univerzális Grammatika megértéséhez, másrészt pedig épp az okozott elemzési nehézségek által, a vizsgálat körébe bevonandó szempontok körét tágítva, új (pl. stochasztikus) modellek alkotására inspirál (vagy éppenséggel kiprovokálja azt).

Aims: revise and systematise stu's previous knowledge of E grammar; provide deeper insight into E morphology and syntax, occasionally contrasting them with Hu; thereby raise stu's grammar-consciousness, and develop their ability to recognise and explain morphological and syntactic phenomena both in E and Hu. The point of view is (usu) that of the EFL teacher.
